Gathering is a key component to Rust, In order to do anything you need to “Farm” also known as, Gathering.
Raiding, Building, PvP and everything in between requires farming.
The 4 types of farming are as follows
- Tree Farming
- Rock Farming
- Component Farming
- Animal Farming
To be able to gather from nodes such as stone, metal, and/or sulfur you need either:
- Stone Pick-axe
- Metal Pick-axe
- Salvaged Pick-axe
Stones can be obtained by mining rock Nodes or setting up a Mining Quarry over a stone yielding area.
They can also be obtained by gathering small, loose rocks, typically found on the ground. Rocks gathered this way will reward the player with 50 Stones.
For most efficient way to gather stone, look for these shiny indicators and smack them with your tool.
To be able to gather from trees you need either:
- Stone Hatchet
- Metal Hatchet
- Salvaged Hatchet
Trees are naturally occurring world objects in Rust. Players can harvest trees for Wood using any gathering tool such as a Rock, Hatchet, or Pickaxe. Harvested wood is added to the player inventory and can be used for Crafting various items or as fuel for Camp Fires and Furnaces.
The amount of wood harvested from trees is generally proportional to its size and type. Large trees can be harvested for around 650 wood, depending on the tool used. When all of a tree’s wood is harvested, the tree falls, giving the player an amount of wood higher than before. However, if only some wood is harvested and the tree is left for a few days, the wood will be replenished.
Naturally grown Hemp plants can be usually found in forests, or near them, and in most deserts. Hemp Fibers can be harvested from Hemp plants; the wild kind are commonly found on all Maps in Experimental Rust. They can be harvested by targeting the Hemp plant and pressing the Use key(default “E”). A harvested plant yields 10 Cloth and 1 Hemp Seed [citation needed as per cloth count and seed], which can be then used to cultivate new plants in the future.
Holding down the Use key on Hemp plants grown from seed will give you the option of taking a cutting from a plant, yielding a Hemp Clone to plant where you choose.
- Hemp Fibers are currently one of three species, the others being Corn and Pumpkin (both edible), used for Crafting.
Cloth is a natural resource obtained by killing, then butchering Animals with a Hatchet or other tool. It can also be harvested from Hemp Fiber plants. Cloth is mainly used for Sleeping Bags, clothes and armor. Additionally, it is used in the creation of medical items and Low Grade Fuel.
